Columbia Libraries Adds More than 7 Million New Items to Catalog through Shared Collections Service

October 11, 2017

Through the launch of a Shared Collection Service (ReCAP) developed in partnership with Princeton University Library and The New York Public Library, Columbia added over seven million items to its catalog in September 2017. Columbia/Barnard faculty, students, and staff now have access to the expanded collection through CLIO. Users can locate newly added Princeton and NYPL materials and request direct delivery to campus using the “Offsite Request” link in CLIO. Requests are delivered in 2 business days.

With support from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Research Collections and Preservation Consortium (ReCAP) partner institutions - Columbia University, Princeton University, and The New York Public Library (NYPL) - began a project in 2013 to transform the management of the ReCAP offsite storage facility from a shared physical shelving space to a shared resource. In creating the technical infrastructure to allow cross-partner borrowing between institutions, each organization now provides its users with access to the ReCAP materials of all three partners!
