This summer Associate Director of Learning Initiatives and Data Services Heather Van Volkinburg has been busy training three brilliant and lucky Barnard undergrads to support research in the Empirical Reasoning Lab. The students, also known as the ERL fellows, and to BLAIS staff as the ERLettes are Olga Garduno '15, Sarah Linden '17 and Michelle Loo '16.

Here are the ERLettes spelling out E R L at the Staten Island ferry terminal. L-R: Michelle, Olga and Sarah

The ERL fellows are gaining or increasing proficiency in

  • Data literacy
  • Data Visualization
  • Excel
  • GIS techniques and programs (including Arc-Map, Google Earth, Arc-GIS Online)
  • Statistics (regression, correlation, means comparisons, chi-square)
  • Stata & SPSS
  • Peer mentoring practices

Heather describes the program as "intensive & exhaustive (puns intended)" and reports that the undergraduate fellows have "have done some amazing research projects by applying the skills they've been learning."

This fall, you'll find them working, along with Heather and other members of the ERL staff, in room 200 in the library eager to help you manipulate your data.
