Access for Visitors

Barnard welcomes the use of its collections by researchers and scholars not affiliated with a college or university. Please contact the Barnard Library by phone (212-854-3953) or by e-mail ( in advance of your visit so we can arrange access. Staff will provide a reader's card that can be used with a photo ID for entry and use of the collections on site. The card does not include borrowing privileges.

The Barnard Archives and Special Collections are open to external researchers by appointment. 

Visiting Scholars with an appointment to the College or University at the recommendation of a dean, director, or chairperson of a department and with the approval of the Provost may register with the Columbia University Library Information Office for reading privileges in other Columbia Libraries. The fee for Borrowing Privileges is $30 per month.  For more information, see Access to Columbia Libraries.
