On April 12th, members of the Barnard community gathered to celebrate the presence of the I Am Queen Mary statue by artists La Vaughn Belle and Jeannette Ehlers, at the Milstein Center. "I Am , We Are" provided a moment to embrace the Afro-Carribbean histories of resistance conjured by the sculpture. The space surrounding the statue was transformed by Afro-Cuban drumming, and dance, followed by a writing workshop in which participants generated submissions for a digital anthology inspired by the art. This event was co-sponsored by Barnard Library and Academic Information Services, the Barnard Africana Studies Department, and the Writing Program.
